The mutant has been arriving for some time now - not Donna
Haraway’s cyborg, machine and human hybrid that is both
fictional and real, but an equally intriguing coupling - one
of textiles and technology. This year’s graduates on
MA Textile Futures are making a significant contribution to
bringing the future into the present but with a nod to the
past. Their work marries technology and textiles, creating
a seamless fusion where aesthetics and change are at the forefront.
Stemming from informed and experimental research, their propositions
are individual but the resulting design applications aim to
affect the way we live our lives for a more sustainable future.
The questions they raise are many:
- What will the erotic
future feel like? - How can the consumer be rewarded for embracing
‘wear and tear’? - Can worn surfaces erode to
create visual pleasure? - Can luxury be sustainable? - How
can we treasure our time and value the unnoticed - Aimless
doodling, eating on the go or a visit to the bathroom? - Can
the surface of the body be exploited to create a screen upon
which digital ornamentation is privileged over digital information
overload?
