Scientist: Leonie Ringrose

Designer: Mathias Gmachl

The concept for our group was based on the similarities and differences between science and design. Our brain storming session revealed that scientists are searching for a hidden truth whereas designers are searching for something new. Similarly successful scientific findings and design are based on a large amount of failed experiments!

Leonie extracts DNA from one fly and plants it in another and there is a large possibility the offspring will inherit the newly introduced trait, for example the white fly eye as opposed to the red fly eye. We decided to work with the theme of inheriting genes through design. Why could a chair not take on the characteristics of a chest of draws? Why couldn't a broken chair self heal with the help of DNA from a healthy chair? With all this in mind and a lot of similar ideas wanting to be delved into we group 2 decided to do 2 films, with 2 ideas, and double the amount of entertainment!!

The first movie is a stop frame animation that explains the idea of a broken sofa self healing by taking DNA from a chair and what happens when these two separate objects become one!

The second movie is a drawn animation of Leonie using her expertise to extract the DNA from a fruit fly and embed it into a chair. The chair then inherits andtakes on the characterisitcs of the fly!

Watch and enjoy...
