Biography

Heather Smith is a textile designer based in London. Her work explores the powers of the natural elements (earth, water, wind, fire) and how they can be used in the design process.

During time spent developing her own work, she has spent over 6 years travelling to and from Laos where she has worked with different ethnic groups. Projects involved the documentation and development of the rich textile traditions practised in various regions of northern Laos.

Previously Heather studied her undergraduate degree at Chelsea College of Art with a 1st in BA Hons Textile Design. where she extensively explored fabric and surface manipulation, natural dyeing and stitch techniques.

Research Question

What is the future for surface decoration?

What is your vision of textile futures?

To bring poetry to new or old technologies in a surface material context.

What is the project about?

The desire to work in conjunction with nature - to allow nature itself to bring pattern and decoration to exterior or interior surfaces. In employing the effects of nature as a means to mark a surface, I have facilitated the potential for the natural elements to play a part in creating decorative walls and floors - resulting in organic embellishment without harm to the environment.

What does this project mean to you?

To step back from the process of design and decoration and allow other forces to have an input.

What inspires you?

To be reminded that we cannot escape nature's presence; when I see little reminders of nature's footprint on an overly humanised world.

Material/ Technology

Wood, metal, plaster/polymer, indigo, laser cut felt all finished with the magic of nature!
