Breathe
to breathe - to inhale and exhale air, naturally and freely..
To protect us from airborne pollution, I have designed breathable blinds for the Asian market.
The blind filters the air and indicates the levels of airborne pollution, creating a safe and relaxing environment. Situated in the window and the colour of the design gradually changes to indicate the levels of pollution.
The design is inspired by peach blossom: widely depicted in Asian art, this sweet smelling and beautiful flower announces the arrival of spring. It is brought into the home to bring good luck for the following year and to ward of evil spirits, of which pollution is one.
This project is inspired by my concern for the amount of pollution we breathe in each day. Over 50% of the worlds population now living in urban areas, often in high density housing. Many cities, especially in Asia, suffer from high levels of smog and pollution, so air quality is an increasing health and wellbeing issue.
The final collection is made up of Jacquard woven and printed blinds, using sustainable materials sourced from the local Asian market such as bamboo, silk ,hemp and organic cotton.
I would like to thank Philips for their sponsorship and support of this project.
