Synesthesia

Future Travel project sponsored by Samsonite 2008

Project Description

A collection of textile that blur senses

The purpose of this project is to create a collection of textile that blur senses.

Synesthesia (Greek "syn" = together; "aisthesis" = perception) is a condition in which people experiences the blending of two or more senses. With that neurologically-based phenomenon, the stimulation of one sensory leads to automatic involuntary experiences in a second sensory. Perhaps it occurs because of a cross activation, in which two normally separate areas of the brain elicit activity in each other.

To design a textile collection related to synesthesie is quiet complicated, as you can't really define one type of synesthesie, or make someone who is not becomes a synesthete. So I have decided to choose ten adjectives and their antonymes, and to do a questionnaire survey. I have asked to many people what they were thinking about these words in terms of material, color, smell, taste and sound. This book show the result of that passionating questionnaire.

  • Some pages of "Senses and Words":

This is the proof that perception could be so different for everybody. What could be more sharp that a cymbals sound in my mind ? But for others, this sound is very delicate... What could be colder that the smells of a freezing morning ? But for some people, this is how they define an opaque smell...

So what I wanted to keep from synesthesia is that it is first a story of perceptions. Cause each synesthete sees differents things, and they can't really explain to the others what they see. Then, is that synesthesia is magical, cause you probably think like I do : What could be more wonderfull than seeing a color symphony when you are listening to your favorite band ? Finally, is that synesthesia is showing a contrast, contrast of senses, contrast of definitions, contrast with the antonymes.

Then I began working with cracking. A cracking that slightly open. A cracking that could breath with the bag, that could open and close. This cracking is a way to disclose our personnal effect unintentionnaly, just like synesthesia could do with our personal perception of life.

  • Some cracking pictures:

Each synesthete is free to explain to other what he feels, or what he sees. If he wants to. The bag will act the same way by showing or not what it contains. When the bag is empty, the cracking is closed and you can't see anything. When the bag is full, the cracking opens and let appears some undescriptible shapes.

Intended Outcome

  • To design more personals luggages
  • To help non-synaesthetes to experiences synaesthesia
  • To surprises customers with sharps contrasts
