‘Undressing Room’ – A Smart Sensual Space

My work explores how the colour and texture of an interior space can change in response to mood and human interaction and potentially generate a richer, more sensory experience for people. Inspired by the notion of 'restrained eroticism', undressing to reveal the female body and 'Sensism', I have created a luxurious, sensuous and smart collection of textiles, which facilitate the experience and would be located in a leisure 'boudoir' space.

My aim is to marry together emotional aesthetic design and smart technology to produce smart textiles which engage the 'senses holistically and improve well being' (Sensism).

Techniques combined - digital printing with silk screen printing, flocking/foiling with thermochromic ink, laser cutting with piercing, traditional Japanese shibori and contemporary design, stitch and electronic sensors.

I have used luxurious, natural fabrics inspired by my research - wild silk, silk and hemp mix, silk satin, silk chiffon and leather. Digital print is dye efficient, ultimately I would re-print my designs with electrochromic inks which are significantly more energy efficient than thermochromic but currently prohibitively expensive and scarce.

Biography

Wendy is a designer, a technologist, an entrepreneur and a mother. Her first degree in Computer Science from Imperial College set up a career in IT and Finance, leading to starting her own internet business in 1999. Following the successful sale of her business Moonfruit.com in 2005 Wendy started her transition to textile designer culminating in her MA in Textile Futures. Wendy is married with 2 children and lives in West London.
